A majority of small businesses never need a formal business plan!  In fact a formal business plan would be a waste of time and money.

Why would you want a business plan in a formal language that is hard to understand and hold little meaning to you?  I'm sure it means something to the lawyers and accountants. 

Normally a formal business plan is prepared by a professional who also happens to charge a professional price for their services.  It is prepared in a formal language understood by CPAs, Lawyers and financial lenders.  It becomes useless to most small business owners.

An informal business plan is prepared by the business owner and is used to guide the startup and continuation of the business.  The major drawback with this is that it is usually accomplished using a computer program.  Most computer programs are expensive and you are still faced with a hard to understand format.  It becomes overwhelming to a lot of business owners.

At the heart of any business plan is a feasibility study.  This is formally done by CPAs and once again becomes a mystery to the small business owner.

    I am a small business owner and have literally struggled to get my business off the ground.  I have read a ton of books on how to be successful, every one of them mentioned it was imperative to have a business plan.  I have downloaded ebooks on how to write a business plan, how it should be constructed and formatted, but it was all gibberish to me.  Having no business training it was like a foreign language.  Market Research, Market Analysis, Profit Margins, and Overhead Costs are just a few of the phrases I avoided like the plague.

   I knew I was supposed to have a business plan but was horribly intimidated by all I was reading and totally overwhelmed with the training required to understand it all.  In the long run I just gave up and told myself that business plans were for big businesses that were looking for funding.  Little did I realize that in the research and formation of a business plan I was to learn the nuts and bolts of owning an Internet  business that would help me focus my business endeavors to achieve success.
